Description

This talk will focus on the functions of self-injury, how to assess the behavior and differentiate it from suicide. Dr. Hollander will speak about the prevalence of the behavior and it's biological basis. He will then turn the discussion to treatment with an emphasis on the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Attendees will be able to:

  • Be able to assess the function of self-injurious behavior
  • Be able to describe the relationship of self-injurious behavior to emotion regulation
  • Have an introductory knowledge of how to use Dialectical Behavior Therapy as a treatment modality
  • Be able to describe the prevalence of self-injurious behavior and it’s biological basis


6 CEUs Available for State of Florida LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, & Psychologists. Partial credit is not available. You must attend the complete training, sign in and out, and complete an evaluation to receive credits.

The workshop is designed primarily to train mental health providers and other health care providers, or who are enrolled in a degree program that results in such a role. Though we welcome a wide variety of attendees, the talk is designed primarily for treatment providers. This workshop is not designed to provide personal treatment. Do not register for the workshop in order to seek treatment.

The Speaker:

Dr. Hollander received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University in 1979 and completed a two year Post-Doctoral fellowship in Clinical Adolescent Psychology at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School in 1981. Dr. Hollander has held several positions at McLean including staff member at the Adolescent Day Service and the Adolescent and Family Treatment Unit. He was the first Director of the Acute Adolescent Residential Program and a founder of the 3East Dialectical Behavior Program at McLean where he is currently Director of Training. In addition, Dr. Hollander is Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry of the Harvard Medical School and on the teaching faculty in the Department of Child Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Michael Hollander, PhD has been treating adolescents and their families for almost forty years. He has developed an expertise in individual and group therapies especially the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy with teenagers. In addition, Dr. Hollander has an expertise in Mentalization based therapies for adolescents. He has a strong interest in understanding and treating adolescents who engage in self-injurious behaviors. He has co-authored several scholarly articles and chapters on this topic. He is the author of Helping Teens Who Cut: Understanding and Ending Self-Injury which was awarded book of the year by the American Journal of Nursing. Dr. Hollander currently resides with his wife and two dogs on Chebeague Island in Maine.
